Cheap Roller Doors – do you know what you are buying?

Back in 2016 we posted an article from BBC Watchdog highlighting a company selling roller garage doors which were failing and then, when the customers went to claim on the warranty, found it not to be worth the paper it was printed on.

It is hard to believe that was 6 years ago and the company directors are still operating, under various different company names.

In addition we have seen a large increase in garage door manufacturers, suppliers and installers with some amazing deals to be had but do you really know what you are buying?

 

An automated door is potentially the largest, and most dangerous, piece of machinery you will have in your home.  Making sure your new door is safe, reliable and installed correctly is so important but if you haven’t purchased an automated door before where do you start?

Our advice is always to:

1. Get three quotes – Don’t be swayed by pushy sales teams offering a once in a lifetime discount if you order there and then.  Genuine businesses will give you a price and honour that price for a certain time period, giving you time to consider your options and make the right decision for you

2. Check the warranty – Most automated doors come with a five year warranty as standard.  Reputable manufacturers will advise the door needs annual inspection to keep the warranty valid however they will not offer you an extended warranty if you pay extra, be wary of such deals.

3. Check the safety feature – Many cheap roller doors are sold as ‘hold to run’ or ‘dead man down’ without a safety edge.  If the door works on hold to run and can be operated using the remote control then it is NOT compliant.  Click here to watch a video from the Door and Hardware Federation about safety features.
